Applying Lessons Learned from Romania’s Response to Avian Influenza to the Implementation of Telemedicine in Romania

April 11, 2013 - Carla Stone, MS Engr. and Donald Kosiak, MD, MBA, FACEP spoke today at the World Psychiatric Association Conference in Bucharest, Romania.  Their presentation on “Applying Lessons Learned from Romania’s Response to Avian Influenza to the Implementation of Telemedicine in Romania” was met with many questions by Romanian physicians who were interested in how a countrywide telemedicine system rollout would work.

In 2005-2006, Romania reported wild bird die-offs associated with Avian Influenza (HPAI H5N1) in the Danube Delta and its spread across rural Romania. At the time, Romania’s policy and response capabilities were inadequate to ensure rapid control and prevention of future outbreaks. Lessons learned are applicable to preparing for the implementation of telemedicine across Romania.
